Assignments are a crucial aspect of teaching. If an assignment isn’t well designed, how can anyone know what students are learning? If students don’t perform well, is it because of the material or because the assignment itself might be getting in the way?

Assignment design workshops – also known as assignment “charrettes” – provide a structured opportunity for faculty to offer constructive feedback on each other’s assignments. Using assignments provided by the participants themselves, charrettes create a “trading zone” where faculty can exchange ideas about how to strengthen assignments and make clearer connections between assignments and important course, program and institutional learning outcomes.

Charrettes can be conducted with three people or dozens. SCHEV has sponsored regional workshops involving close to 100 faculty from multiple institutions, as well as small online charrettes for instructors who prefer that format.

If you would like to lead a charrette yourself, this website gives you the tools you need to do it on your own. Alternatively, dozens of faculty and staff members around Virginia have been trained to lead charrettes. If you would like to have a trained facilitator visit your campus, email Jodi Fisler to inquire about facilitators in your area.
