The Career College Advisory Board (CCAB) was established in 2004 by the Council to provide advisory services in academic and administrative matters and other issues related to private proprietary postsecondary education schools. Any private proprietary institution of higher education or academic-vocational non-degree school certified by SCHEV to operate in Virginia is eligible to have a representative on CCAB.

The Finance Advisory Committee (FAC) meets monthly and consists of the chief financial officers of the fifteen four-year state-supported colleges and universities, Richard Bland College, the Virginia Community College System, and several community colleges.

The General Professional Advisory Committee (GPAC) is an advisory group that includes the presidents of the four-year state supported institutions of higher education, the president of Richard Bland College, the Chancellor of the Community College System, and several community college presidents. They meet once a month, usually on the fourth Monday of most months except July.

The Instructional Programs Advisory Committee (IPAC) meets approximately eight times per yearand consists of the provosts or chief academic officers of the fifteen four-year state-supported colleges and universities, the Provost of Richard Bland College, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the Virginia Community College System, and several community college chief academic officers.

The Library Advisory Committee (LAC) consists of Librarians from twenty-one Public and three Private colleges and universities. This committee also includes the Director of Library Automation and Learning Resources, the Senior Coordinator of Academic Affairs from the Council of Higher Education, the VIVA Project Director from George Mason University, and Librarian of Virginia from the Library of Virginia.

The Military Education Advisory Committee (MEAC) implements and monitors military-related education policies and facilitates communication regarding military education. The Committee is comprised of representatives from two- and four-year public institutions with liaisons from various interested state and military-related agencies.

In support of SCHEV’s Statewide Strategic Plan for Higher Education, the Open Virginia Advisory Committee (OVAC) make recommendations to Council regarding initiatives and policies that may facilitate the adoption of open educational resources by the public institutions. In addition, the committee organizes events such as workshops and conferences to facilitate inter-institutional networking and the sharing of best practices. The OVAC consists of at least one representative from each public four-year institution, community college representatives designated by the Virginia Community College System, and representatives from the Library Advisory Committee (LAC).

The Private College Advisory Board (PCAB) meets at least once a year and consists of the presidents of the private not-for-profit colleges and universities in the Commonwealth.

The Sexual Violence Advisory Committee identifies programs, policies, training, and education opportunities to prevent and respond to sexual violence within the Commonwealth's institutions of higher education. The committee focuses on improving practices shaped uniquely by Virginia's policy context (e.g., Code of Virginia), in conjunction with federal requirements, with an emphasis on supporting institutions for which expertise is not readily available. The committee supports institutional leaders (presidents, vice presidents, and boards of visitors) in their efforts to enhance prevention and response efforts.

The State Committee on Transfer (SCT) is charged with developing and monitoring transfer-related policies. The SCT consists of representatives from two- and four-year public and private institutions and state educational agencies.

The Students Advisory Committee (SAC) is comprised of students from 2- and 4-year institutions throughout the state who advise the Council on systemwide issues of concern to Virginia's college students.

The Virginia Assessment Group (VAG) promotes quality higher education through assessment and institutional effectiveness practices in all higher education institutions.
