Where We Are 2024 [pdf]

A joint event of the Virginia Military Institute College Debates and Discourse Program (sponsored by the Building BRIDGEs Club and the Center for Leadership and Ethics), the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and the College Debates and Discourse Alliance (a collaboration between Braver Angels, ACTA and BridgeUSA).

This training event is designed for an audience of college faculty, administrators, and student leaders. The program will begin with a conversation about the state of dialogue on college campuses and the ways in which the Braver Angels debate format can address some of the most pressing issues with respect to civil discourse, freedom of speech, and de-escalation of hostility over competing views.

After an introduction to the format and goals of the Braver Angels debates, attendees as a group will select a debate topic and engage in an actual 2-hour debate. Following the debate, the event organizers will lead a workshop on how to launch a successful debate program using the Braver Angels model and how to integrate debates into the classroom.
