May 30, 2024
10:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Squires Student Center, Virginia Tech  (Blacksburg)

Registration is now open for SCHEV's 2024 "Day of Dialogue" on civic learning and engagement, to be held at Virginia Tech on Thursday, May 30. See below for details, and register here by Friday, May 3. Feel free to share this information with others who might be interested. Contact JodiFisler@schev.edu with questions.

Program Content

The event has four primary objectives:

  1. To continue affirming the value of civic learning and engagement for all students’ development and success, as well as the health of communities and society;
  2. To provide practical tools and strategies for teaching and assessing civic engagement;
  3. To share ideas, resources, successes and challenges across campuses and across roles;
  4. To build and strengthen relationships among civically-oriented faculty and staff within and across institutions.

Based on the input of past and prospective attendees, much of the content this year will focus on dialogue itself: different models for teaching, practicing, and assessing the skills needed to engage in productive conversation with others across lines of difference. The day will begin and end with an experiential session, so that you can see for yourself what it looks and feels like to participate in one of these kinds of dialogues. You can attend one or both of these sessions, depending on your travel needs. (We hope you will attend both!) The rest of the day will consist of semi-structured conversations with other attendees based either on brief remarks from panelists or on topics selected by the attendees themselves.

Who Should Attend?

Participation is open to anyone involved or interested in civic learning/engagement and higher education in Virginia, including 2-year and 4-year public and private institutions. Students and community partners are welcome, but the program will be geared primarily toward institutional faculty, staff, and administrators. Participation in a previous Day of Dialogue is neither required nor assumed. Indeed, we look forward to expanding the conversation, bringing in new and seasoned voices alike.

Cost to Attend

There is no cost to register. Lunch will be provided.

For those who need overnight accommodations, we invite you to make your own arrangements at one of the many hotels in the vicinity of the university. Most hotels offer a limited number of rooms at the per diem rate for state employees, as well as discounts for seniors and AAA members. Convenient options include:
