"The State Council of Higher Education has hired A. Scott Fleming as its new director.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin appointed Fleming to the SCHEV board last year. Before his appointment, he was a staff member to the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. He also worked for education companies - Scantron, which makes the ubiquitous bubble sheets for test taking, and a textbook publisher called Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
SCHEV is a coordinating body for the state's colleges and is governed by a board nominated by the governor. It implements statewide policies set by the General Assembly and governor, suggests policies and funding and conducts research. It aims to promote access, quality, affordability and accountability, according to its website.
Fleming was an executive at the Strada Education Foundation, a nonprofit that provides financial support to college students. He most recently worked as chief strategy officer for a company that develops curriculum for early childhood education called Teaching Strategies. He has bachelor’s and graduate degrees from Brigham Young University.
Fleming replaces Peter Blake, who retired last year after leading SCHEV for 12 years," reports the Richmond Times Dispatch.
