Advisory: SCHEV Council Welcomes Five New Members and Meets in Person on July 13

RICHMOND — On July 13, the State Council of Higher Education will meet in person at its offices. During the meeting, the Council will welcome five new members recently appointed by Governor Ralph Northam.

  • Mirza Baig is the co-founder of Aldrich Capital Partners.
  • John R. Broderick recently retired as the eighth and longest-serving president at Old Dominion University.
  • Jennie O’Holleran is a partner at Broad Street Group.
  • Alvin J. Schexnider, PhD is a senior fellow and senior consultant at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. (Appointment is effective August 1, 2021.)
  • Jeffery O. Smith, Ed.D. is superintendent of Hampton City Schools.

Northam also reappointed Victoria Harker to the board. Harker is executive vice president and chief financial officer for TEGNA Inc., formerly Gannett Co. Inc. and originally was appointed to Council in 2017.  Full bios are available online.

The formal Council meeting will begin on Tuesday, July 13 at 10:00 a.m. and will include remarks from Major General Cedric Wins, Virginia Military Institute superintendent. Council will take action on one new certification for a private postsecondary institution (University of Maryland – National Landing) and the Academic Program Productivity Review.

The meeting also will include an update on The Virginia Plan for Higher Education and the American Rescue Plan Act, as well as discussions of future enrollment trends, the statewide innovative internship program, and the final report of the Virginia Military Institute investigation, including statewide opportunities for SCHEV to consider.

(Please note: In-person room capacity is limited to 30 attendees. Members of the public will be admitted on a first come, first served basis. SCHEV will follow safety protocols of the Centers for Disease Control. We encourage those interested in observing the meeting to join via the WebEx link below.).
